Lukman Asks OIC to Discuss Al-Aqsa Conflict

Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman Hakim Saifuddin hopes the UN Security Council and Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) immediately convene to discuss the crisis that occurred in the Aqsa Mosque.

"The UN Security Council and the OIC must immediately convene to immediately stop Israel's actions at the Aqsa Mosque," said the minister in Jakarta on Monday (7/24/2017).

The situation in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex has worsened in recent days. The Israeli security crackdown not only resulted in three deaths and over a hundred wounded, but has heightened tensions and severely restricted the activities of worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

According to the Menag, all parties should be able to exercise restraint. The sanctity of the house of worship, including the Al-Aqsa Mosque, must be protected from all forms of violence. "Anyone who is in the house of worship, must be kept safe," said Menag.

"Anyone should be guaranteed his right to worship in the house of worship. There can be no prohibition related to it, "he continued.

Through a phone call with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Saturday (22/07), Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia asked the United States to urge Israel to stop the restrictions on worship and violence at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Quoted from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Retno admitted very worried about the worsening situation in Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. Indonesia, which condemns the deaths of three Palestinian youths, underscored the need for immediate action to escalate violence and suspense.

"The escalation decline is very important to prevent the situation from getting worse," Foreign Minister Retno said.

In the phone call, the US Secretary of State also expressed similar concerns about the situation at Al-Aqsa Mosque Complex. US Secretary of State said that his side has been in talks with Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

The US Secretary of State agreed with Indonesia on the importance of preventing escalation in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. The US secretary of state also affirmed that the status quo regarding the complex status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque is also important to maintain.

Foreign Minister Retno has also conducted intensive communication with the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Palestinian, Turkish, OIC Secretary General for the situation in the Al Aqsa Complex not to deteriorate and worship activities can be immediately restored.
